I see that the think tank report which apparently advised Northerners to move south to find work has been given a hostile reception by the politicians and much of the media.
This is understandable in our political climate, where any opinions which might cost votes or have any relationship to the truth are unacceptable. I live in a `deprived' area of eastern England. When I first moved here about ten years ago the local people accepted that it wasn't a good area for career opportunities. It was a nice place to live but not a good place to progress in life. Because of this realistic attitude, many local youngsters joined the armed services or moved south to create careers. Britain was rewarded with a generation of young people, invariably hard-working and of good character, who were flexible and willing to contribute their talents to the nation's defence and economic well-being. Now, my home town is full of welfare scoungers who have none of these attributes. They have no intention of contributing towards the nation's defence or economic well-being. They like it here. Thanks to government grants, paid for by the hard-working people in the south, it's a nice place to live. It still isn't a good place to create a career, but hey, who cares? As long as those government grants and welfare payments keep coming in... I could move to the south and create a better career than the one I have. But I don't want the hassle and the overcrowding. If Southerners are willing to put up with this, and get their reward, that's fine by me, they've earned it. The locals' attitude towards flexibility is far more beneficial for Britain than the politicians' attitude towards it, and the attitude towards it in much of the media. But then, the locals aren't trying to win any votes, they don't have a political agenda. Last edited by bornfree; 17-08-2008 at 07:38 AM. Reason: addition |

What about the government providing financial incentives for moving some of the wealth up north ?
But no like so called global warming, it's all down to the population to play ball isn't it ?

We used to have things called enterprise zones but I think they are illegal under the EU.

The incumbent government has been moving departments northward and the devolution of Scotland and Wales has transferred work away from London and the S.E.
Enterprise Zones still exist IBA: Enterprise zones: List of enterprise zones you can also get EU money - nice to see our taxes (less a handling charge) coming back As regards the think tank F*CKWITS

The BBC is apparently moving north also:
CONFIRMED: BBC moving up north to Manchester - Broadcasting - Digital Spy Forums Having lived in various parts of both the North and South I can heartily confirm from personal experience that more people should not be moving South, if nothing else, peak hour trains cannot cope as it is, and it doesn't need a 'think tank' to work that out.
