I 'stick up' for the UK on a mainly American board, and who said you were a nasty racist for sticking up for your country? Certainly not me.

I just think it takes some guts to wade into a site where maybe your views are outnumbered. And like complimenting this guy doesn't mean I'm criticising anyone else.

My biggest problem with many of the Yanks who post on these boards is that they are all jingoistic, and 'you are either with us, or against us' in their attitudes. So any even imagined slight is taken as being anti-American. This is unreasonable, and I didn't expect to find that sort of thing on a Brit board.

There's lots of things wrong with the UK, and Australia, and the USA, and France, and Germany, and for anyone to point them out is not being ant-American or anti-British, etc. Unfounded and unreasonable criticism is not fair, but if we do stuff that warrants criticism, we should cop it sweet.

I was, and you know it, referring to England, the UK and for that matter, Britain, are no longer viable in the post devolutionn era.

I will spare you the list of inequalities that exist because:
a. you don't believe that there are inequalities ( I refer you to a previous post)... "If there are inequalities"
b.I'm sure you can do some research into the differing health and social care facilities provided by the Scots NHS, the Welsh NHS and the N.Irish NHS, when compared to the English NHS.

Oh please - it's too early in the morning for this merde. What is your problem.

You took me to task for complimenting an American on his posts, and now you are ranting about some previous topic. Whether the Scots NHS is better than the English NHS is simply not relevant to what we were discussing.

I don't give a stuff about devolution, if it makes the Scots or the Welsh feel better about themselves, then fine - it's a good thing. But I am a citizen of the UK, and I consider myself British first, and English second. This thread is entitled the British Empire, not the English Empire, and there is a reason for that.

If you have some difficulty with that, then I regret it, but don't take your frustrations out on me.

Oh come on - be fair. As far as I could see in the posts I read, he was reacting to comments from others. I am no great admirer of the US, I can assure you, but fair's fair. You can't generalise about 300 million people.

And sorry - but I have never heard of the 'Level 9' site.

Nevertheless, as Mike says, in most western countries at that time the majority of land was owned by the aristocracy and the Landed Gentry. In Ireland they gave work to the peasantry, built cities, towns, railways, roads, harbours and ports, an patronised the arts and fine educational institutions such as Trinity College. However, possibly because of their religion, the peasantry overpopulated to such a vast degree that when the potato blight hit Europe from Silesia all the way through to Ireland, crunch time arrived.

It is argued by the stupid republicans that the landlords "caused" the famine; in other words that they somehow introduced a bacillus into their own crops which would lead to financial ruin for most of them. Sheer madness to say things like this for an age when there were no chemicals available to protect any crops anywhere.

Just as the poor emigrated from almost every country in Europe so they emigrated from Ireland too, and doubtless to an eventually better quality of life. What on earth would have happened had there been no famine and the population continued to grow to mammoth levels into the 20th century with its agricultural depressions year in year out and the mechanisation of the farms. What then? The landlords have been the scapegoats in this.

After the delightful IRA had their Civil War murdered landlords and their families, torched magnificent houses and destroyed priceless works of art etc., agriculture in Ireland went into steep decline. Where the large landlord has capital, the small farmer has none. Eire's government nevertheless came to an arrangement with successive (hated) British governments to be supplied with subsidised foodstuffs after their independence. It was only in the early years of WWII that it came to the attention of the British Cabinet, that while our people were on severe rations and U-boat sinkings were taking their toll, we were still shipping food to Ireland who was almost openly collaborating with the enemy. It was stopped.

I don't have the latest figures here but Eire was a 100% beneficiary for the first 7 years after it joined the European Union, while at the same time we were donating some £2 billion per annum to the EU. British taxpayer's money again going to a chauvinistic Ireland.

I just wonder when the British people are going to wake up to the way they have been insulted and treated by all and sundry over the past century and start standing up for themselves. A good start would be factual history books for the schoolchildren.

Because it's my country. and I acknowledge the bad in my own country, if you are a "my country right or wrong" type. then you are probably racist as well. if you hate immigrants in the "stick up" you do that could also explain it.
