I like the smoking ban as do most people I know.
Even smokers I know prefer it now.

I don't see what purpose the smoking ban is supposed to achieve, so I have to conclude it is an exercise in yet more authoritarian control over our lives. The easiest way for the government to control people is to hit them in their pockets and the threat of massive fines would deter even the most ardent smokers. That publican is a hero, shame there are not more like him. I am not a smoker but I think those that support the smoking ban are complicit in the Government's fascist agenda. How does it feel British-Conservatism to be a 'useful idiot'.
My dad's sister has a pub it used to be thriving, every weekend they would have a band on or some other form of live entertainment, but my Aunt has a heated, lighted outdoor shelter with about 12 tables, and that is what is keeping the pub ticking over, customers come in get their drinks and go straight outside to the heated shelter where they can smoke and drink and socialise in peace, but I wouldn't want her utility bills when the winter sets in. During the day it had its regulars, mostly elderly men that went in for a warm, a pint and a little chat, now it is like the Mary Celeste during the afternoon, and not much different week day evenings. There is pub across the road, it had 3 tables and benches and is open to the elements, it shut down as did the one around corner which has a main road front with a metal boxed ashtray on the wall. Those unfortunate pubs are hit worst by the smoking ban in many ways, because customers gather on the pavement blocking the highway, which irritates pedestrians and people living in nearby houses. Fights break out often and things can get very nasty, that is the reality of the smoking ban. The pub industry has been decimated by the smoking ban, and that’s all there is to it. British –Conservatism, keep your false statistics and your generalisations about how everyone of you mates supports the smoking ban because your chatting sh*t. |

Good post Kali but i doubt the real truth from a person with first hand knowledge would make any difference to the I'm alright jack brigade.

I asked my taxi driver, ( a keen darts player and smoker) tonight if he thought the smoking ban had affected the pub trade. He said it had definately affected the type of pub which was visited by smokers on the way home from work, but for him the biggest blow to pubs down here is the super markets selling cheap booze!

Now take your average smoker who is forced into the freezing cold and offer him cheap alcohol and a warm place to smoke he might just take you up on it, its called staying at home. Yes i agree a lot of people stop of at the pub on the way home and i suspect this trade has been hit dramatically. The other thing to take into consideration is how often someone goes to a pub if you go once every week or two i doubt you would notice the affects of the ban but if you go regularly say 3 or more times as i do you would soon recognise the down turn in trade. The other thing is as pubs close down other pubs will pick up what trade was left so they will be doing okay
