Hi Tim. The fact that you work in the UK are paid in the Uk and pay tax on that work in the UK is irrelevant. Iam sure you are well aware that the question is -do you pay UK tax on your world wide income and capital gains as a UK resident does. ? If you do not you are non-resident for tax purposes and therefore you are only allowed to visit the UK for a certain number of days a year. This is pretty odd .
AS MPs by definition have to work and be in Westminster most of the year no WEstminster British MPs have ever been or are non-resident.The situation is different about the House of Lords who are not of course elected. A little while ago Cameron promised that all Tory peers would be resident for tax purpose per the definition I have given above. In the past Lord Ashcroft who of course pays tax on his UK income but did not on his overseas income becuse he allegedly lived abroad and may still be making that claim. This is a constant runni ng sore for the Tory party but of course they only became aware of it after Ashcroft had been enobled or were too care less to find out and Ashcroft does not face reelection. We now turn to you and Andreasen. You are apparently non resident in the generally accepted sense that you do not pay tax on worldwide income like UK residents but both of you propse to seek the votes of UK citizens who do pay the full UK tax burden. I think you are the first two people who wish to stand for election in Westminster or Brussels who are non resident for tax. Frankly this is going to damage UKIP immensely and I dont know why you are doing this. |

If Tim pays tax abroad when he lives abroad and pays tax here when lives here then I don't see the problem. In fact, as long as he doesn't break the law I don't see what business it is of anyone but him anyway. The people you should be worrying about are the corrupt tossers at Westminster who are diddling us out of billions in their massive social engineering experiment.

Agreed. If people are abiding by the tax laws then I see no problem.

So you are quite happy to be represented by a person who can only visit the UK for a certain number of days each year. That is truly a bizarre opinion especially when we are told that the battle for independence from the EU will be fought in the UK.
UKIPs new election slogan will be-Vote for the party of tax exiles-that will be a real zinger. |

If he's elected as an MEP he'll be spending at least 3 days a week in Brussels or Strasbourg and travelling between them and home so what does it matter? He probably spends more time in the UK now than he would as an MEP resident in the UK. Besides, he said in July he would be living full time in London from July and it's now September so he should already be living in England full time and this whole debate is pretty academic.

Nice little advert on the UKIP site. What exactly does "where you can join in" mean? Comments tend to be standard on all blogs.
I note Bob FM is one of only two commentators on the first page of blog entries. Is nobody else bothered? |
