Yes, and I have no grudge against John Bufton, the returning officer, but he wasn't on the NEC, was he?

10.2 The Party Secretary is responsible for ensuring that the administrative and other arrangements of the Party comply with all legal requirements; for maintaining an up to date record of Party members for national Party purposes; for the administration of leadership elections and elections to the NEC (except when he or she is a candidate, when the NEC shall nominate another of its members to carry out this task).
Rules for the conduct of NEC elections - UK Independence Party
Quote:
1.1 The NEC shall appoint a Returning Officer in accordance with Paragraph 10.2 of the Constitution.

1.3 The NEC shall either:
1.3.1 Appoint an independent agency to conduct the election according to rules to be agreed with said agency; or
1.3.2 Instruct the Returning Officer to conduct the election in accordance with Sections 5 to 9 of these Party Election rules.
So who on the NEC approved this decision?

It's very kind of you to say so, although I would suggest that the majority on here would disagree! Are you still wearing that plaid skirt (sorry, kilt!)? Your stirling efforts will be rather more popularly missed than mine, if you see what I mean!

BTW, regarding your membership and voting, ISTR that under the old constitution, overseas members were awarded associate status, and were specifically debarred from voting rights, although that provision appears not to have continued into the new constitution. I'm happy to be corrected, but I'd suggest the root of the problem was someone remembering the old rules and assuming they still applied, and now i's proved to be wrong, you'll never get anyone to own up to who it was!

Best regards,

Mark

My suspicion was that the draft of the new constitution ran so late, that the NEC shoved it out the door without properly understanding what it said in detail, or meant, just to get it off the dratted ever-growing agenda!

The membersip part of the old constitution was as follows, Mark:

Quote:
4 MEMBERSHIP
4.1 Membership is open to those entitled to UK citizenship and resident foreign nationals who share its aims.
4.2 Members are those who are over 16 years old, maintain their subscriptions and agree with the aims of the Party.
4.3 Members shall accept the Party's constitution and rules and maintain its reputation.
4.4 Associate membership, enjoying all the benefits of membership except voting rights, is open to supporters not entitled to full membership.
4.5 Where constituency associations are established, membership shall be of the local Parliamentary Constituency Association and, by affiliation of the constituency association, of the national party.
4.6 The National Executive Committee may accept affiliation from other organisations. Such affiliated bodies will not enjoy voting rights.
4.7 Full members shall receive a membership card and the Party's newsletter, They shall be entitled to vote in national Party elections and in the selection of constituency association Officers and candidates to contest parliamentary and local government elections.
I had a membership card, newsletter, and voted in the recent NEC elections (for Lisa!)
That counts as "full" under the old rules, methinks

I wonder if it was sections of the party rule book I am thinking of then - they are widely scattered, and to get hold of all of it proved a mission too much for me, but I have seen large sections of it. I was fairly certain, although not positive, that I have read somewhere that overseas residents are considered associate. Whether I'm right or wrong, I do sympathise, particularly as you'd voted in the NEC elections, and sympathise greatly.

Best regards,

Mark
