Isn't the solution a simple one, put the candidate who is standing in another area at number 10.

For people in the south east, there are 14 candidates; 10 votes to be cast. I think I have read and understood the instructions.

As I understand it this voting system can be manipulated. Is it not so that if enough people gang together and only vote for one person, he/she has a much better change of being number one on the list?

The person will still have to have more No 1 preferences than most other candidates and a fair few smaller portions of a vote to guarantee to become top. All candidates could advise their supporters to do the same and make it FPTP.

gumshoe, I would urge you to correct your post before our resident linguistic experts have a go. Now I know and everyone else will know you meant chance, not change, but they are sticklers for accuracy even though they don't follow their own advice.

No. Many members who are not on the internet, and probably many who are, will not know that some of their candidates are standing in a second region. That's the whole point of the rules saying this must be disclosed to members. Also, members are allowed to vote for one candidate only if they so wish and in the case of Marta Andreasen particularly, her higher profile may well induce some members to vote only for her, so wasting their votes completely if she withdraws from their region.

That is not the main the point, though. If those running an election breach their own rules, some candidates and their supporters are bound to feel disadvantaged and the whole process must be invalid.

Call me naive but surely the Chairman of each branch would tell their members. If we had a candidate standing in more than one area, I would not only write to every member and go much further and advise them to seriously consider whether they should support such a candidate, because frankly I would personally view that as someone simply wanting to join the EU gravy train at any cost. Someone I would never vote for personally.
