The re-branding, much akin to Labour's 'New Labour' tactic, has attracted substantial media interest. Here's how the nation's media reported, commented on and judged the move. Here's how the two popular right-wing newspapers, both potential mediums for support for the party - The Daily Mail and The Daily Express - chose to follow it.

These are all friendly articles taking UKIP seriously (at least for the time being).

Couldn't see much mention of Ukip in that Express piece...

I think it's a fairly easy convert - it despererately tries to ape the Mail - but I loathe it, or more to the point its creep of an editor, porn-baron Richard Desmond - former Tory then Labour donor, sucker-uper-to the establishment par excellence.

It's quite obvious to the impartial observer that UKIP's "rebranding" consists of it merely reinforcing the fact that it is the New Tory Party (or rather the Old Tory Party).

The Tories will now attack anyone thinking of defecting to UKIP as "letting Labour in" and "splitting the anti-socialist" vote.

Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells might consider joining but Mr and Mrs Average in the UK? I think not.

The above probably encapsulates the present situation quite nicely - and the challenge is therefore to win over Mr Average. First, he probalby doesn't vote at all - due to disenchantment with the politicians 'all being the same - and many of this kind will feel that Cameron is just Blair Mark II.

I certainly think his approach will be indentical if he wins - no clear, coherent vision just what looks good and 'in touch'. Remember Labour's first term when they didn't do a thing other than lots of platitudes for fear of upsetting anyone.

Ukip will make gains - you're wrong on that count but I do fear that it will play into the hands of the Tories' main challengers in many seats - the ghastly Lib Dems, the fully paid-up EuroSocialists.
