Dr John Whittaker was introduced as being the Party Chairman and also a MEP for North West England. There did not seem to be any attempt to curtail his comments which I thought were clear and directly answered the questions and points made by callers. His comments included:
The United Kingdom cannot prevent the free inward movement of people from other parts of the EU; this being one reason why UKIP keeps mentioning the EU. The EU is bad for non member countries with the example given of fishing and West Africa. UKIP would wish to see increased links with the Commonwealth as well as trading links with EU countries. Poor take up of apprenticeships as immigrants undercut wages. Figures for those in employment have risen but so have comparable figures for those unemployed by about the same amount. Other panellists stated that there was a responsibility placed on failed asylum seekers to leave this country and that the national minimum wage was being rigorously enforced. Also one member of the panel said that his engineering firm had taken on staff who had come from the Baltic States and his experience was that there are insufficient suitably qualifed British applicants for the vacancies. kernow: in answer to your question, yes, it was good for UKIP. I apologise for the delay in posting the above. Hopefulapplicant |
