Not sure how much of a vote winner this would be. But I was amazed at the SKY News poll on this.
Here are the poll results: Should euthanasia be made legal in the UK? Expires:05 Dec 2004 Yes 97.47% (50,439 votes) No 2.52% (1,306 votes) That is a quite amazing majority, even if the Sky polls are not the most reliable. Personaly I agree with the majority. If a person is suffering and wants to end their suffering, it should be their choice! |

Supported. But make no fuss or manifesto committment. It's probably way down people's priority list - wide support doesn't translate INTO phpbb_deep support!
Probably better to make "assisted suicide" an affirmative defence rather than actually per se legal, because it still needs to be thoroughly determined in court that the killer was given genuine permission. |

I'm pro euthanasia, if combined with a robust 'living will' type system, and if well controlled. (We don't want queues of teens turning up just because their favourite idol has died!) In other words, some sort of boundary needs to be drawn as to who can request and receive euthanasia, with some automatic counselling and pre-discussion mechanism. After all, its not every day you get to take your own life is it?
