Even my wife asked why the hell Question Time was wasting time on talking about a dance competition.

Bread and circuses was my exact reply.

Rather than pursuing a variety political outcomes - wouldn't it be better for pressure groups, whose causes is supported by the majority, to unite with the purpose of changing the system so that governments were obliged to obey the will of the people [through petitions and then referenda?]?

On certain issues yes. Ones where there is no right or wrong answer and some persons freedom will suffer no matter what. Then the least worst option is democracy.

However, I am losing a lot of faith in Democracy. The two wolves and a sheep arguing over who is going to be for dinner is true.

There are some issues, where the majority simply shouldn't have a say in it. For example, what a couple of people choose to do in the privacy of their own home.

These issues, or the range of issues, could be predefined.
These are the times that try men's souls: The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Thomas Paine, The Crisis

Some qualification might be needed here.

I think some serious qualification is required. It could get messy though and that is a recipe for arguments.

The problem is worsening with the dumbing down of the state education system and the promotion of "correct" views.
As the Libertarian Party have suggested 1984 is a work of fiction NOT a manual
"That government is best which governs least."
"This is a sharp Medicine, but it is a Physician for all diseases and miseries".
"To be "matter of fact" about the world is to blunder into fantasy --and dull fantasy at that, as the real world is strange and wonderful."

I don't think we need judges and 12 people jury's, let the public on mass decide if someone should be hanged or set free. Without naming who's involved, publicise the case for and against on tv and let people decide the punishment with their remote controls, that way society gets what they believe is justice, if they don't vote, they don't care enough.

The problem is, the public don't wana decide the law that guides their lives.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I would have been no good on the panel as I've never, ever watched it!

Have you seen the video 'Leonard Cohen - Democracy' on YouTube?

Can't post the link - it does not work.
