Nomuhammadday - epetition response We received a petition asking: “We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to not create a National Holiday on the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.” Details of Petition: “This is to counter the petition raised by Tahseen Khalid here -http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Mawlid/ - petitioning the Prime Minister to make the birthday of Muhammed a national holiday. Britain is largely now a secular nation, and honouring Muhammad in this way would be inappropriate and offensive to a vast majority of the population. The undersigned all feel there are many more British people deserving of a national holiday, such as Darwin, Newton, Churchill - all of whom would be more appropriate for a day to honour them.” · Read the petition · Petitions homepage Read the Government’s response The Government receives a variety of requests for additional bank holidays but there are currently no plans to change the current pattern of bank holidays. Public holidays in Great Britain do not by tradition commemorate particular individuals, events, or institutions, other than those associated with Christmas and Easter. There are however ongoing activities about how best we can celebrate and commemorate the nature of our citizenship and national identity in the UK. The ‘Governance of Britain Green’ Paper set out the Government’s commitment to lead an inclusive debate to develop a Statement of Values to help identify what binds us together as a nation. We will begin an inclusive process of discussion and deliberation across the country, involving roundtable events and online engagement. Central to this will be a Citizens’ Summit - a broadly representative group of around 500 people from across the UK - who will be asked to deliberate and decide the framework for the Statement of Values and make recommendations on its uses. Further information about the debate can be found on the Ministry of Justice website at Governance of Britain Home In addition, Lord Goldsmith’s review of Citizenship published in February recommended considering the case for creating a national day focused on ideas about shared citizenship. The purpose of Lord Goldsmith’s review was to provoke a public debate on these issues. The Government will consider Lord Goldsmith’s recommendation in light of the ongoing debate. No, I thought others would be interested. It is all real and was a genuine petition opposing a petition for a day to commemorate Muhammed.

No doubt it will happen anyway the British people would rather become an ethnic minority in an Islamic state than be seen as Racist.
