For those that don't know it "The tax was introduced under the Act of Making Good the Deficiency of the Clipped Money in 1696 under King William III[1] and was designed to impose tax relative to the prosperity of the taxpayer, but without the controversy that then surrounded the idea of income tax. At that time, many people in Britain opposed income tax, on principle, because they believed that the disclosure of personal income represented an unacceptable government intrusion into private matters, and a potential threat to personal liberty.[citation needed] In fact the first British income tax was not introduced until the late 18th century and the issue remained intensely controversial well into the 19th century"
Window tax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I like the bit about people not wanting to disclose their income as they thought it governmental intrusion.

I think that the LibDems idea is the most concerning. They want to get rid of it and then introduce a local income tax. What is the point of this? People are already paying income tax to central government, they don't need one to be introduced so that local government can fritter it away and top up their pension.
Most people would prefer a local income tax to council tax.

Upon completing university I would certainly be better off under a local income tax than a council tax - the SNP and Lib Dems have a large enough majority in the Scottish Parliament to pass this through.

As I said we could afford to abolish Council tax just by cutting spending else where.

we could "almost" abolish income tax (in the south of England) if we let the rest of the country go their own way. but I agree on cutting waste/spending elsewhere.

If that happened the South with it's weakness would soon look like LA.
While the North would become very monoracial quite quickly.

People often forget that the South East is not some sort of unit of Britain completely unconnected from the rest. It is the center of government and the center of finance and draws lots of talent from outside of itself as well as from within itself. I don't think you can have such a 'have your cake and eat it too' attitude to London in particular.
