Default Petition against Sharia law rises to 24th

This petition - against Sharia law being recognised in the UK - has risen rapidly to 24th most popular on the Prime Minister's website, with over 3,700 signatures:

Petition to: Stop Islamic Sharia Law being used in Great Britain. | Number10.gov.uk

It still needs more support to show how deep is the opposition to sharia law having any part to play in this country.

For a start, it results in the importation of the treatment of women as second-class citizens from the Muslim world on to these shores. Muslim women will be pressurised into using sharia courts which discriminate against women and require the testimony of two women to equal that of one man (!)

Looking at the anti-sharia law petition on the Prime Minister's website this morning, an astonishing 300 or so people have signed since last night, pushing the total over 4,000. So it looks like this petition is beginning to attract mass support and it may well get publicity if it reaches 1st place (only another 32,000 signatures to go.

Once again, unfortunately, illustrating that multiculturalism is bringing division to our society - in this case, between those who want to bring their own, medieval legal systems with them, and our legal system.

The policy towards Muslim demands on our society seems to be one of constant appeasement, which almost never works.

P.S. My own petition on the Prime Minister's website:

Petition to: Bring in a new law to make it a criminal offence to leave children aged under 12 on their own. | Number10.gov.uk

Would be grateful if you would support it in the interests of reducing the increasing number of young children being left at home on their own

This petition will go precisely nowhere.

And I'm not saying that because I'm a Muslim.

I personally don't want to live under Sharia law myself.

The legal position of the existing Sharia law courts is this:

Quote:
Muslims involved agree to be bound by traditional sharia law, and under the 1996 Arbitration Act the court's decisions can then be enforced by the county courts or the High Court.
Islamic sharia courts in Britain are now 'legally binding' | Mail Online

Muslims must agree to be bound by the judgement of the Sharia court which acts as an arbitrator.

It is a legal loophole, and the Jewish exploit it too:-

Quote:
British Jews, particularly the orthodox, will frequently turn to their own religious courts, the Beth Din, to resolve civil disputes, covering issues as diverse as business and divorce.

"There's no compulsion", the registrar of the London Beth Din, David Frei, said. "We can't drag people in off the streets."
BBC NEWS | UK | Religious courts already in use

To stop both Sharia and Beth Din courts from operating, it seems that one would have to amend the current laws to either exclude religious courts from acting as arbitrators (probably against Human rights - why treat religious people differently?), or else get rid of arbitration altogether (very unlikely as it saves time and money from being spent in the court system).

At the end of the day, the only way anybody can be bound by the judgement of a Sharia court is if they personally agree to be bound by the decision. I fail to see how this has an impact on, or is the business of, anybody else outside those seeking arbitration for a civil case, such as divorce, contractual disagreement and the like.

Where there is a criminal element involved in a case, I'd say that the Sharia courts should leave well alone and let the police and normal courts deal with the matter.

The petition creator has not really stated his position very well either:

Quote:
The most senior judge in England and Wales has said that aspects of Islamic sharia law could be used in the UK, provided they don't conflict with existing laws. I say that Islamic sharia law should not be used in the United Kingdom and the Prime Minister should do everything within his power to stop it being introduced.
So, this person disagrees with the most senior judge in England and Wales, and it is his right to do so, but he doesn't really explain his reasons, does he? The judge caveated his statement with "provided they don't conflict with existing laws". What are the reasons for disagreeing with this, considering that Jewish Beth Din courts have been operating for some time and the Muslims have only just got in on the act.

As my previous post points out, the Sharia courts take advantage of a legal loophole regarding arbitration. Muslims, then, did not 'demand' anything, but in fact are exercising pre-existing rights which we all of us have.

Muslims have not been appeased. They are just using the existing law.

Default Another anti-Sharia petition

I hadn't noticed earlier that the 'Stop Sharia Law' petition was due to end on 4 October.

It did well in its last few days, rising rapidly from 24th to 18th, with several hundred signatures per day.

However, the good news is there's now another one, and this one lasts until January:

Petition to: Stop Sharia Law from being binding in law under arbitration tribunals rules. | Number10.gov.uk
