Default The Liberal Party in Henley

Will the Official Liberal Party stand in Henley whenever a by-election is called?

There has been some debate here Liberal Forum :: Index under the elections section.

They should do, but please, drop the "official" bit. It's all a bit 80's!

Apparently we have a prospective candidate and deposit ready, and the Liberal NEC will discuss the by-election at their regular meeting next week. Presumably they'll decide on tactical grounds whether to contest it or not.

You had better hurry up with your decision I reckon.

They say it may be on 26th of June.

Sadly, the Liberal Party won't be standing a candidate in the Henley by-election.

Apparently (according to a poster on the Liberal Forum) the NEC discussed a possible candidacy at their regular meeting last week. There was no consensus so they agreed to let the local party (the Oxfordshire Liberals) take the decision.

Dane Clouston, who is Chair of the Oxfordshire Liberals, and lives in the Henley constituency, was at the meeting (he is an NEC member). He had been keen to have a go, but given the very short time available for the campaign he now felt that we should give it a miss this time.

Various Liberal activists who were planning to campaign in Henley are now going to discuss where best to focus their energies in terms of future campaigns.

See also UKIP Henley: Public Meetings

Apparently the chairman of the Liberal Party will be sharing the stage with Nigel Farage at a UKIP-sponsored public meeting.

A pity that there won't be a Liberal candidate this time, but I'm happy to again see some cooperation between UKIP and the Liberal Party. I haven't heard Steve Radford speak but I've read that he's good.
