![]() And I suppose, if I were of that frame of mind, I could characterise you as something this:- ![]() But the truth is, you know nothing about me, and I know nothing about you. Your mental construct of me may well have a grain of truth in it, and likewise, mine of you, but that isn't what we really are, is it? We probably both have a life and a family and a daily grind, and the easy route for us to deal with each other's views is to reduce them to a prism of 15 second sound bites which come from the most vociferous and extreme members of our community, when in fact, our true thoughts and feelings are infinitely more nuanced than that and would take a lot longer to fully digest and understand. I promise I won't reduce you to a caricature of your true self, all I ask in return is the same favour in kind.

The Invaders were part of a militant Islamic sect who converted at sword point - bit like some Christian missionaries were

It's good to hear that `Islamophobia' accusation again, it's a great way of neutralising any kind of debate about Muslims. You have a view about Muslims? Hey, you're verging on Islamophobia! You have a view about homosexuality? Hey, you're verging on homophobia!
Interestingly, although Muslims are, to put it mildly, fiercely opposed to homosexuality (let's cut the bullshi-t, some of them would happily kill gays), they are rarely if ever accused of homophobia. This is because in their case homophobia is a religious attitude. This makes it acceptable. Actually I don't particularly like homosexuality either, although I don't feel an urge to kill gays. But I'm Christian, so it's ok to accuse me of homophobia. My take on Pakistanis marrying first cousins is that they do it to strengthen family ties and because they don't want to marry into ie. integrate into mainstream British society, which is mostly Christian. I think I just verged on Islamophobia. One interesting aspect of this inter-marrying is, its practitioners obviously don't care about the effect it will or might have on the finances of the NHS. On the cost of caring for children who reportedly suffer from problems as a result of inter-marrying, and have to be treated for these problems. I think that this is because to its practitioners family ties and the desire not to integrate into British society are more important than the finances of the NHS, more specifically more important than the affairs of the British state. But when you think about it, do smokers care about the effect that smoking has on the finances of the NHS or on the British state? Does Britain's army of welfare layabouts and unmarried mothers on state benefits care about the effect that their actions have on taxpayers, some of whom are Muslims, and on the British state? Let's look at smoking. The government is constantly hassling smokers, and this is entirely because of the effect that smoking has on the finances of the NHS, and on the affairs of the British state. Does the government constantly hassle Pakistanis that marry first cousins, because this reportedly has a similar effect? Seriously, compare the two `campaigns.' On the one hand, with smoking, we have TV ads, warnings on cigarette packs etc. Some of the TV ads. have been quite graphic, they have shown people dying of lung cancer. With cousins inter-marrying, what do we have? A single government minister commenting on it, warning of its hazards. No TV ads, no warnings in health clinics or hospitals (I presume), no graphic images of children who are suffering from defects. Quote: `Last night, the Muslim Public Affairs Committee condemned his appointment. A spokesman said: 'Phil Woolas has a track record of insensitive, inappropriate outbursts that have verged on Islamophobia.' Last edited by bornfree; 19-10-2008 at 09:04 AM. |
