Separatists in both the disputed regions had stepped up attacks on Georgian security forces in the days leading to the collapse of the ceasefire. Separatists in Abkhazia had actually declared a full "militarisation" prior to the crisis. The separitist movements in both regions were created by, funded by, and on a day-to-day basis controlled by, the FSB.

Interestingly, many of the "Russian citizens" were Ossetian and Abkhaz (ie Georgian) but have had Russian citizenship bestowed on them so that Moscow can "protect" them.

This is similar to what I had heard and I think that this was on Radio 4. BUT as you point out it is the BBC which despite their portrayal of neutrality in reporting can tend to, shall we say, be slightly slanted in their delivery of the news.

So basically, is there any proof at all to the allegations that South Ossetia (with the alleged backing of Russia), provoked Georgia into this attack?
