Default England is just terrific

I have just returned from my summer holiday spent in the very rainy and misty Lake District. The weather was so bad most days that it was beyond complaint.

I has not realised before that Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall were so close to the Lake District and so we spent two days exploring them. I strongly recommend both as worth visiting.

The highlight of our holiday was visiting the Roman fort of Vindolanda and I can why the museum there claims that it is the single most important Roman site for finds in Western Europe.

The wet and muddy conditions found with the sucessive layers of the Roman fort at Vindolanda were perfect for preserving organic material.
Everyone has heard about the Vindolanda tablets (voted by the public a couple of years ago as the top treasure of the British Musuem), but the Vindolanda site museum has an extraordinary collection of Roman textiles, clothes, shoes and remarkably well preserved metal objects.

I choose to take my holidays in England for various reasons, but the beauties of places like the Lake District and the historic treasures we have here, do I find make England an endless source of pleasure and interest .

Agreed. Let's spread the good news about our wonderful country.

As a volunteer guide in my parish church and an owner of Visit Britain rated holiday cottages (just buying a new one in the Isle of Wight) I'm doing my bit to celebrate this great nation.

Bring it on!

Personally there is no better place in the world to me than Britain, Ireland and perhaps North West Europe. I'd rather travel Englnd or Normandy or even just across Cornwall than go to Sydney or Bali.

The Liverpool resort is Southport. It is very under rated and has many Victorian verandahs providing covered walkways along the streets. There are plentiful tea shops where the fine ladies drink their tea with crooked little fingers. Another great English tradition!
You can see Blackpool Tower across the bay and surprisingly near. I understand that as the crow flies it is 9 miles yet if you drive round the coast something like 30 as you are taken near Preston!
But beyond this you can make out the foothills of the Lake District and to the right the Peak District. I was amazed when I first knew that yet on reflection it makes geographical sense.

Of course, I'm used to tripping round Hadrian's Wall country and the Lake District, so I'm trying to go to places in England I haven't been to before.

I had a five day trip to the Cotswalds this year and thought it was wonderful.

Yes, and if you go further south to Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset, not to forget Devon and Cornwall, you'll can experience other of England's charms!

Presumably those based in and around London will be well aware of the charms of the whole of the south coast and, moving further north, those of Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

American visitors never cease to be amazed at the huge variety of scenery and their communities to be experienced in what for Americans is a very small area!

In a world where change is made for so many reasons (not all good) it is refreshing to travel to the glorious Lake District and know that in 20 years time it will be mostly unchanged.

It is a shame that other areas of the country aren't cherished. I live around Sherwood Forest area and it seems that every field is being covered with industrial buildings. We have enough retail parks already and the huge wharehouses (mostly empty) don't provide many jobs.

So, as a small business I feel angered when I see huge empty buildings with signs saying that it was funded from the EU (using my money) and that it is rate subsidised (while I will pay even more to subsidise the big companies that are lured from other parts of the country).

Sorry to go off on a rant but whilst I am glad we look after the most attractive parts of the country I fail to see why we allow so much of the rest of it to be trashed for big business and council job creation.

And let's not forget the Peak District, which remains beautiful.

Northumbrian, I love the cotswolds but a friendof mine whospends much time trvelling the country preferes the north Derbyshie villges. Apparently, they are more natural whereas many cotswold villages cater too much for tourists..
