EUROPARLTV - PRESS STATEMENT 17 Sept 08
Today saw the launch of Europarltv, the web-based TV channel of the European Parliament. This will bring to the general public such excruciatingly boring programmes as "live coverage of the Parliament's Committee on Fisheries".
Three years in the planning, we are told that Europarltv will have an annual operating budget of nine million euros. This of course ignores the not insubstantial development costs, and the provision of Parliamentary facilities.
At the press launch, we were told that one of the key concepts of the project was to be "transparency". Questions, however, would not be allowed!
There is no indication at all as to how the existence of the channel will be advertised, or how viewing figures will be monitored.
The worst aspect of this latest extravagant project is the provision of a channel aimed at children. Tom Wise MEP, who sits on the Parliament's Culture & Education Committee, said: "This is blatant propaganda. I voted against this project every step of the way, and I condemn it absolutely".
