'Gendarmerie': EU ministers are calling for a European-wide police force
Vast amounts of personal data on British citizens will be sent abroad, under advancing plans for a European-wide police force.

EU ministers have also called for top-secret intelligence to be pooled between the 27 member states - and shared with US authorities.

The plans do not rule out foreign police officers being allowed to patrol British streets.

I'm no longer against an EU-wide police force...on the proviso that they can only arrest me for breaches of UK or Community Law.

Question Clouseau on the beat!

Well you wouldn't want the same Portuguese police patrolling your streets as those involved in the McCann case, would you?

I can't see that happening. What I can see however is a system whereby say British authorities (eg. The Police) prosecute individuals/companies in other EU countries for breaching Community (EU) law (but not domestic law).

This has already been implemented somewhat through legislation such as the Enterprise Act (eg. Part 8), which allows bodies such as the OFT and Trading Standards to take action against traders based elsewhere in the EU for 'Community Infringements'.

Well it wouldn't be - all member states would be able to do it.

So all member states would be monitoring Britain...

What about Britain monitoring the other countries and the countries monitoring each other?

Or it is just about the need for the EU together and monitor what Britain is up to?
