Why is Greenland covered in ice?

From :- Why is Greenland covered in ice?

A summary of :-
'Late Pliocene Greenland glaciation controlled by a decline in atmospheric CO2 levels', by Daniel J. Lunt, Gavin L. Foster, Alan M. Haywood, and Emma J. Stone. Nature, 28 August 2008, doi:10.1038/nature07223.

Quote:
Only changes in carbon dioxide levels are able to explain the transition from the mostly ice-free Greenland of three million years ago, to the ice-covered Greenland of today

……………………..
While the results suggest that climatic shifts associated with changes in ocean circulation and tectonic uplift did affect the amount of ice cover, and that the ice waxed and waned with changes in the Earth's orbit, none of these changes were large enough to contribute significantly to the long-term growth of the Greenland ice sheet.
Instead, the new research suggests that the dominant cause of the Greenland glaciation was the fall from high atmospheric carbon dioxide levels to levels closer to that of pre-industrial times. Today concentrations are approaching the levels that existed while Greenland was mostly ice-free. (my bold)

Ice only falls from the sky in the form of hail stones following supercooling of recirculated precipitation within major cumulo-nimbus formations. The taller the cumulo-nimbus (controlled by the level of the tropopause), the greater the probability of hail. The level of the tropopause near the poles is considerably lower than the tropopause near the equator.

I think the ice was formed by compression of accreted snowfall over several hundred millenia.

Greenland, a country ideal for greens. Not only does it have your name on it but in about 20 years time it will have the same climate as the UK. So invest in real estate in Greenland to protect you and all of your family from excessive heat and floods. You can be protected from desert like conditions and droughts and be solar powered as well. Buy now before the price goes sky high. Each house is fully fitted with an entirely eco-friendly fridge that takes no electricity!
