Default A Cricketing Metaphor for Global Warming :-

The DT had an obit. the other day for Brian ‘Bomber’ Wells – the ex Glos. & Leics. Cricketer. He was one of the games ‘characters’ & I had the pleasure of meeting him in my teens & have his autograph.
However, his antics reminded me of those of some other cricketing characters and struck a chord with my thinking on AGW as follows:-
(Acknowledgements to Freddie Trueman – I think))

Characters :-
Bowlers – Climate Scientists.
Batsmen – Contrarians
Umpires – recruited from a USA ‘Institute’
Crowd – Rest of world scientific community & politicians.

1st ball
The bowler delivers a medium- paced straight as a die ball – nicknamed ‘James Hansen’s testimony’ on account of it’s dead straight honesty with no bending the facts. An audible click is heard all players and most of the crowd. The ball smacks into the diving Wiki-keepers gloves) and the bowler wheels around and, in synchrony with other players, howls ‘howzat’ at the umpire.
Umpire is unmoved.

A few balls later,
Bowler delivers another of his specialities – this time nicknamed the ‘hockey stick bender’ on account of it’s late swerving & sharply rising properties. The batsman steps back and the ball hits his pads plumb in front of the wicket. The bowler wheels around and, in synchrony with other players, howls ‘howzat’ at the umpire.
Umpire is unmoved

A few balls later,
Bowler delivers another speciality, nicknamed the AR4 because of its’ 95% certainty in beating the batsman
The ball smashes into the batsman’s wicket. Strangely, no ‘Howzat’ from anybody - but bowler, with a malicious grin on his face, quietly turns to the umpire and says :-

‘Nearly ‘ad the bu**er then‘ !!

Crowd boos as batsman is shamed into walking.

I have several cricketing metaphors being a great fan of that fine game and I thought I would adapt one.

Welcome to Lords where you have just missed seeing g hall hit one of Clippo's balls clean out of the ground.

Clippo is bowling with three short legs one of them square although why we should place such emphasis on his physical characteristics is beyond me.

And if Clippo really is representative of those who believe climate change is threatening our very exisistance then I think Geoffrey Howes cricketing metaphor used against Mrs Thatcher is the best one because those who talk in similar fashion do their cause no good.

'It is rather like sending your opening bats to the crease only to find moments before the first ball is bowled their bats have been broken by the team captain.

Your acknowledgement is correct it was Fred Trueman talking about playing against a "village " side under an assumed name during an Australian cricket tour!

How did I guess someone would rise to the bait !

Presumably rjt & g hall are the ‘silly’ fielders – silly-mid-off & silly point.

& thanks for confirming my doubt Kernow.

Why is he a troll?

He seems to know or at least be able to articulate alot more of an argument than the anti-MMGW side. Which is quite a metaphor for the whole discussion.

I agree with Clippo. AGW does seem like a load of balls.

Que ? (I hope not an attempt to deceive)

Of course,-
- the facts of AGW 'batter' the contrarians into defeat
- the debate is well & truly 'over',
- contrarians are completely 'stumped'
- and, unlike a political group, there's no chance of a phoenix rising from their 'ashes'.
- ...... ad nauseum
