Brief extract from the Independent On Sunday article on the link given in the first posting to this thread: "......after the announcement (that Mr. David Davis MP was to resign from the Commons and fight a By-Election over the Governments 42 days' detention rule which he opposes) which took Westminster by surprise, Tory support dropped to 41%, 15 points ahead of Labour."

WTF....the results of their poll shows an increase of Conservative support of 1%. Can someone tell me, given that the Labour % hasn't changed and the Lib Dems have lost 2%, that this is a cut into the Tories poll lead!?
The temporary cut they mention immediately after Davis' immediate resignation is a big load of balls. Misleading (or damn right false) headline of the century, in my opinion.

According to the poll in The Times they have increased their lead by 2% from last month and are now leading Labour by a massive 22%.

Yes - I was aware of that opinion poll too, Baron. Prime Minister Gordon Brown didn't look too worried about the Conservative opinion poll lead on today's lunchtime television news. He looked quite cheerful standing next to American President Mr. George Bush.
I expect Mr. Brown and Labour strategists will be looking at local ward By-Election results every Thursday perhaps seeing them as a better guide to the level of support for the parties than some national opinion polls. |

They are still dead politicians walking though. The Irish vote won't have done them much good and we still stand at the edge of a housing crash. I guess it will be in free fall around the time people go to the polls, considering the amount of artificial value that houses have acquired due to speculation. On top of that is the oil price and so we are going to fall into recession and it will be much worse since our country does not do much that generates real value that can be sold. Manufacturing has all gone to China and the only reason that people have not seen the terrible economic policies that Brown has put into place is because the rising house prices substituted for money created out of tangible things. Everything in this country is so inefficient now that the net result is poverty. Brown will get the blame for it unless of course they switch to Miliband very soon.

If Miliband were to become Labour leader (and Prime Minister if he became Labour leader while his party were in office) no doubt the electorate would be reminded of his wish to deny us a referendum on the EU Constitution/Lisbon 'Treaty' by the Conservative Party and UKIP.
